about Michelle Scharf, Utah Doula

My journey into being a doula began with my births and my lessons from each of them.

I have learned that it is okay to trust your doctor, or to question your doctor. It is okay to

birth in the hospital and it is okay to not. Each birth is a life lesson. Each time we bring

forward new life we are creators.

It is my heartfelt belief that women who search their heart and educate their minds,

connect with their babies, they will know who needs to be there with them, what their needs and their babies needs are, they will create the perfect experience no matter what the outcome is, because they will have listened to their heart.

My life has been a wonderful journey along the path of the road less taken. I have learned to trust my body; it is working for me. I trust my hands, they are guided from above, my intuition, it is tuned to a watchful eye, and my heart, it has been the compass that I have followed and has kept me safe.

My Birth Philosophy

I believe in woman's ability to give birth, that it is a normal physiological process and not a medical one. I believe that when women are given their all their options, they will choose what is right for their health and that of their baby. I beleive those present should trust the woman to know what is best for her and her baby. When women are allowed that responsibility and choose to take on that responsibility the satisfaction and the ability to live with the outcome are increased significantly. I believe that birth memories will last a lifetime. I believe that birth is as safe as life gets. There are no guarantees but even in the midst of unforeseen unhappy circumstances, positive memories can be preserved and the event processed rather than buried emotionally. I believe in the value of women in service of other women.

I believe that women were made to give birth. I believe that there are many factors that play into a woman's choice for her birth and that her emotional, physical, and psychological well being should be taken into account and her wishes supported. I believe all women have the right to the loving support of her partner and if she desires a doula

I also believe in normal birth and uphold the six care practices set forth by Lamaze International and promoted through the Utah Birth Network. To learn more visit www.utahbirth.net
